A floating nightstand gives you a place for your phone, glasses and a book without taking any floor space. In a small bedroom, those few inches of clear floor make the room easier to walk through and easier to clean.
Below are 7 solid wood floating nightstands with drawers from our shop, with real sizes, so you know what fits before you buy. After the picks, you will find how high to mount one and what to check on your wall.
Why a floating nightstand works in a small bedroom
- The floor under the nightstand stays open, so the room looks larger and the vacuum reaches the wall.
- You choose the height. Mount it level with your mattress, whatever bed you have.
- A drawer keeps chargers, medicine and earplugs out of sight. An open nightstand top collects clutter fast.
- Most models are 12 to 13 inches deep, so they fit next to a bed in a tight room where a standard 16 to 18 inch deep nightstand blocks the path.
How to pick the right size
Measure the space between the side of your bed and the wall or door first. Leave at least 2 inches on each side of the nightstand so it does not look squeezed.
- 12 inches wide: for very tight spots, like a corner next to a wardrobe or a narrow gap beside a full bed. Holds a phone, glasses and a small lamp.
- 18 inches wide: the standard choice for a queen or king bed. Fits a lamp, a book and a glass of water side by side.
- Drawer plus open shelf: good if you read in bed. Books go on the shelf, small items in the drawer.
- Two drawers: best if you want everything hidden and the top clear.

1. Mini Floating Nightstand with Drawer and Open Slot, Light Oak

Size: 12 in W x 10 in D x 10 in H. Weight: 9 lb. Price: $219
The smallest and lightest pick on this list. One drawer hides small things and the open slot holds a phone or a paperback. The light oak finish keeps a small, dark room bright. Choose this one if you have less than 16 inches next to your bed.

2. Mini Floating Nightstand with 2 Drawers, Chestnut

Size: 12 in W x 10 in D x 10 in H. Weight: 11 lb. Price: $309
Same compact footprint, with two drawers instead of a slot. You get more hidden storage in a 12 inch space, which suits apartments and guest rooms. The warm chestnut tone fits mid-century and modern bedrooms.

3. Floating Nightstand with Drawer and Open Shelf, Light Oak or Chestnut

Size: 18 in W x 12.8 in D x 10 in H. Weight: about 18 lb. Price: from $269
The most practical design on the list for readers. The drawer sits on top and the open shelf below holds books, a charger or a tissue box. Curved edges mean no sharp corners at knee height, a small detail you notice in a tight bedroom. Pick light oak for a Scandinavian look or chestnut for a warmer room.

4. Floating Nightstand with 2 Drawers, Chestnut

Size: 18 in W x 12 in D x 10 in H. Weight: 16.5 lb. Price: $279
A rounded, pill-like shape with two full-width drawers. At 12 inches deep, it is the slimmest 18 inch model here, so it suits narrow walkways between the bed and a closet.

5. Floating Nightstand with 2 Drawers, Walnut

Size: 18 in W x 12.8 in D x 10 in H. Weight: 22.1 lb. Price: $279
The heaviest and most solid-feeling floating model we sell. The deep walnut finish pairs well with white, cream and sage green walls, and the two drawers have polished knobs. Choose this one if you want a darker, richer wood tone.

6. Crescent Floating Nightstand with Drawer, Chestnut

Size: 18 in W x 12.8 in D x 9.2 in H. Weight: 17.6 lb. Price: $269
A half-moon shape with one drawer and a brass knob. The curved underside looks lighter on the wall than a box shape, so it works well above a low platform bed. Pick this one if you want the nightstand to be a design piece.

7. Round Floating Nightstand with Drawer, Chestnut

Size: 18 in W x 12.8 in D x 6 in H. Weight: 13.7 lb. Price: $259
Only 6 inches tall, this is the slimmest profile in the shop. It reads more like a shelf with a drawer than a cabinet, which keeps a small wall from feeling crowded. Good for a minimalist bedroom where you only need a spot for a phone and glasses.

How high to mount a floating nightstand
Mount the top of the nightstand level with the top of your mattress, or up to 2 inches above. At that height you reach your phone or glass without stretching or sitting up.
- Measure from the floor to the top of your mattress. Most beds land between 20 and 25 inches.
- Subtract the nightstand height. For a 10 inch tall model on a 24 inch mattress, the bottom edge goes about 14 inches from the floor.
- Mark both sides of the bed at the same height so the pair looks even.
On a low platform bed, mount a slim model like the 6 inch round nightstand a little lower. On a tall bed with a thick mattress, go a little higher rather than leaving the nightstand below the mattress line.
Are floating nightstands sturdy?
Yes, when you mount them correctly. The wall does the work, so the fixing matters more than the furniture.
- Screw into wall studs whenever you can. Use a stud finder before you drill.
- If there is no stud where you need the nightstand, use heavy-duty drywall anchors rated well above the weight of the nightstand plus what you put on it.
- Brick and concrete walls need masonry plugs and a masonry drill bit.
- Use a level. A nightstand that tilts a few degrees makes drawers slide open on their own.
- Do not sit or lean on a floating nightstand. Keep heavy items like a stack of hardcover books or a large lamp to a reasonable load.
Floating nightstand FAQ
Can I mount a floating nightstand on drywall?
Yes. Screw into a stud if possible. If not, use heavy-duty drywall anchors and check the weight rating on the pack before you buy.
What tools do I need to install one?
A drill, a stud finder, a level, a pencil and a tape measure. Plan for about 20 to 30 minutes per nightstand.
Floating nightstand or small nightstand with legs?
Pick floating if floor space and easy cleaning matter most, or if your bed height is unusual. Pick a nightstand with legs if you rent and cannot drill, or if you want a larger surface and more storage.
Do floating nightstands work with a headboard?
Yes. Leave about 2 inches between the headboard and the nightstand, and mount it at mattress height so the top does not hide behind the headboard edge.
