A narrow console table gives a small entryway a landing spot for keys, mail and a lamp without blocking the door. The trick is depth. Most standard console tables run 15 to 18 inches deep. In a tight hallway, 12 to 14 inches makes the difference between a table you walk past and a table you bump into.
Every console table below is 14 inches deep or less, made from solid mango wood, and has drawers for the clutter you want out of sight. You will also find two open designs for behind the couch, and a quick guide to sizing.
How to size a console table for a small entryway
- Depth: 10 to 14 inches for a narrow hallway. Keep at least 36 inches of clear walkway between the table and the opposite wall.
- Width: about two-thirds of the wall you put the console against. A 36 inch wall suits a 24 inch table. A 48 inch wall suits a 32 inch table.
- Height: 30 to 36 inches. A table around 31 inches tall sits at a comfortable height to drop your keys without bending.
- Door swing: check that the front door, closet door or a coat on a hook clears the table when it opens.
Hallway too narrow for legs? A floating console mounts on the wall and keeps the floor clear for shoes and a doormat. Three of our picks below are wall-mounted.

How to style a narrow entryway console
- Hang a round mirror above the table, about two-thirds of the table width. It bounces light around a dark hallway and gives you a last look before you leave.
- Add one lamp or a wall sconce. A small entryway rarely has enough overhead light.
- Use a tray or a small bowl for keys, so they never end up in a coat pocket.
- Slide a low basket or two under a legged console for shoes, scarves or dog toys.
- Keep the top to three items at most. A narrow table looks cluttered fast.
Narrow console table FAQ
How deep should an entryway table be?
10 to 14 inches for a narrow hallway, and up to 16 inches for a wide foyer. Leave at least 36 inches of walkway in front of the table.
What size console table for a small entryway?
Choose a table about two-thirds the width of the wall, 14 inches deep or less and around 30 to 32 inches tall. For a 36 to 48 inch wall, a 24 to 32 inch table works well.
Floating console or console with legs?
Choose floating if the hallway is very tight, if you want floor space for shoes, or if you clean the floor often. Choose legs if you rent and cannot drill, or if you want an open shelf below.
How high should I mount a floating console table?
Mount the top 30 to 34 inches from the floor, the same height as a standard console table. Screw into wall studs or use heavy-duty anchors rated for the weight.
